How thread consumption is estimated
A lockstitch uses two threads — the needle thread and the bobbin thread — so a seam consumes roughly twice its length in thread, plus extra for seam allowance zigzag, backstitching and thread tails.
Step 1: convert seam length to stitches. Multiply seam inches by stitches per inch. 1,200 inches at 10 stitches/inch = 12,000 stitches.
Step 2: thread per stitch. A single lockstitch uses about 2.5 times the seam length per stitch pair when you count both threads and tension. In practice, a factor of 3× total seam length is a safe planning number.
Step 3: convert to spools. Divide total thread by the spool size. A standard 150-yard spool covers roughly 50 yards of effective seam at 3× consumption — so 1,200 inches (33 yards) of seam needs about 0.7 spools. Buy one spool and a matching bobbin for most projects.
Quilting note. Machine quilting uses far more thread than piecing — a queen quilt can consume 2-4 spools for quilting stitches alone. If you're quilting densely, double the estimate.
What each input means
- Total seam length (inches) — the sum of every seam you'll sew, including piecing, borders, binding and quilting lines. Estimate generously: it's easier to add seam length than to buy another spool mid-project.
- Stitches per inch — your machine's stitch length. Piecing usually runs 10-12 stitches per inch; the default of 10 is a good planning value.
- Spool size (yards) — the yardage printed on the spool. It varies from 100 to 300+ yards, so check before buying.
When to use it. Use this calculator when you're planning a project's supplies, before a shop run, so you know whether one spool is enough or you need two spools of the same color. It's most useful for projects with lots of seams, like piecing a full quilt top, where total seam length runs into thousands of inches. For machine quilting, add the quilting line length as a separate seam entry and expect it to dominate the total. If the answer comes out just under a whole spool, buy the whole spool anyway — partial spools are rarely worth the storage, and a second project will use the rest.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Counting only the needle thread. A lockstitch uses thread from the bobbin too, so real consumption is roughly double your seam length, plus overhead.
- Using seam length as thread length. The 3× factor is there for a reason — tension, backstitching and tails all eat thread.
- Underestimating the quilting step. Dense free-motion quilting can consume several spools; if your plan includes quilting, add that seam length separately.
- Buying one spool for multiple colors. Thread changes mid-project leave partial spools, which is fine, but plan per color if the design demands it.
- Ignoring spool size differences. A 100-yard spool covers a third less than a 150-yard one; the calculator's answer depends entirely on the number you enter.

How long is a standard spool of thread?
Common spools are 100-300 yards. 150 yards is a typical mid-size spool; cones used for longarming are much larger (1,000+ yards).
Why does my machine seem to use more thread than this?
Thread tails, backstitching, tension differences and bobbin winding all consume extra. The 3× factor covers most real-world sewing; add more for dense quilting.
Does thread type change consumption?
Heavier threads (12wt, 8wt) use more length per stitch visually but similar actual consumption. What changes is the look and durability, not the math.
